Visit place regained? This was the theme of the 4th Rencontres de l’IESA arts&culture X {CORRESPONDANCES DIGITALES]on Tuesday April 13, 2021. This cycle of Webinars was organized in collaboration with the Centre des monuments nationaux. Nearly 800 registrations were received, with a participation rate of over 63%. Thank you all for your excellent participation and for sharing so much with us!
In the wake of a year-long health crisis, the links between heritage sites, the public and local communities have been profoundly reshaped. This cycle of Rencontres looks at how sites are preparing (or can prepare) to reopen their doors.
ENCOUNTER 1: REDISCOVERING THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE OF PLACE THROUGH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY.
After a complete and unprecedented shift online, the physical experience of the site by the public risks being profoundly transformed to find more materiality, humanity and sensoriality. Paradoxically, digital innovation could help enrich such physical experiences.

The event featured a variety of presentations:
- Improving visitor comfort by better anticipating a heritage visit: the example of Affluences – Etienne Franchet, Business Development Manager, Affluences.
- Rethinking the visitor experience – Laetitia Pouilly, Head of Data and Visitor Experience, Musée d’Orsay.
- Reconnecting with the materiality of exhibits by encouraging a tactile approach: the example of the textile exhibition (3D) at the Musée d’ethnographie de l’Université de Bordeaux – Christophe Leynadier, Co-founder, Mihaly.
- Reconnecting with sensitive mediation experiences : the Losonnante device in the cartomancy exhibition – Gwenael Beuchet, Collections Manager, Musée de la carte à jouer d’Issy les Moulineaux & Olivier Lebas, CEO, Losonnante.
- Museum of the future: towards a rebalancing of the online and in situ cultural practices? – Alizée Doumerc, Co-founder, GuestViews.

ENCOUNTER 2: RECOUNTING THE PLACE IN THE SERVICE OF ITS HERITAGES.
The rediscovery of places by local audiences will potentially be enriched by new initiatives that are keen to propose new ways of reading and talking about their heritage riches. These initiatives could encourage new approaches and new routes through heritage sites, promoting interaction, play and storytelling.
The event featured a variety of presentations:
- Designing a heritage narrative: a new approach to sources and content, the example of the tour of the Château de Vaux le Vicomte – Laurence Bagot, President, Narrative.
- Entering into a dialogue with the history and works of art of a place: Dame Tholose takes you on a tour of the Musée des Augustins – Elise Dumonteil, Development Director, Ask Mona.
- Offering a fun experience at a venue: the “Casa de Papel” escape game at Monnaie de Paris – Morgane le Geldron, Sales Manager, Monnaie de Paris.
- Developing an immersive experience: the virtual reality escape game at the Donjon de Rouen – Constance Castaing, Director of Mediation, Novelab.
- Making a region as attractive as a TV series: Les Fontenautes, storytelling for the Pays de Fontenay-Vendée – Jérôme Fihey, Founder, Le Crabe fantôme.

MEETING 3: PUTTING HERITAGE TO WORK FOR THE REGION.
After 6 months of closure, how is the return to cultural venues being prepared, and how is its relationship with the local area changing? The deprivation of the tourist windfall is forcing heritage institutions to put local players back at the heart of their audience, co-production and outreach policies. How can we work with schools, universities, businesses and other local cultural venues to innovate? Is networking, collaboration or mutualization of cultural institutions a major asset for the reopening of heritage sites after this long period of paralysis?
The meeting, hosted by Sarah Hugounenq, featured a variety of presentations:
- Becoming a place to serve the local community: MAC Lyon’s synergistic approach since the first confinement – Françoise Lonardoni, Head of Cultural Services, Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon.
- Renewing its relationship with companies by becoming a training and experimentation center for them: the Centre Pompidou’s Ecole pro – Julie Dessay-Gravier, Head of the Ecole pro, Direction des Publics. Service de la Médiation Culturelle. Center Pompidou.
- Federating heritage players across the country across different supervisory bodies: the Institut de Formation du Centre des Monuments Nationaux – Delphine Samsoen, Director of Human Resources, Centre des Monuments Nationaux (to be confirmed).
- A new federating role for regional operators: DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine’ s projects – David Redon, cultural and territorial action advisor, DRAC Nouvelle Aquitaine.
- Thinking differently about the appeal of cultural venues: breaking down the boundaries between culture and tourism to focus on the visitor – Vincent Charlier, Val d’Oise Tourisme.
